45 new neutron rich isotopes identified

July 27th, 2010
by Joseph Magill

T. Ohnishi et al., have recently reported the identification of 45 new neutron-rich isotopes produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam at 345 MeV/nucleon.
The experiments have been carried out at the RI Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Fission fragments were analyzed and identified by using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS. The authors observed 45 new neutron-rich isotopes: 71Mn, 74;74Fe, 76Co, 79Ni, 81;82Cu, 84;85Zn, 87Ga, 90Ge, 95Se, 98Br, 101Kr, 103Rb, 106;107Sr, 108;109Y, 111;112Zr, 114;115Nb, 115;116;117Mo, 119;120Tc, 121;122;123;124Ru, 123;124;125;126Rh, 127;128Pd, 133Cd, 138138Sn, 140Sb, 143Te, 145I, 148Xe, and 152Ba.

China’s first fast reactor

July 22nd, 2010
by Joseph Magill

China’s first fast reactor became critical at 9:50 hrs on Wednesday July 21, 2010. The reactor technology is based on the use of liquid sodium as coolant. This is an important milestone for China’s nuclear programme and indeed for nuclear programmes worldwide.
China plans to build up to 60 new reactors and have a nuclear power productivity of around 75 GW (gigawatts) 2020.

July 2nd, 2010
by Joseph Magill

Nucleonica will be on display at the European Research & Business Speed Dating event on 6th July in Turin. This event is organised in the framework of ESOF2010, Euroscience Open Forum, the biennial pan-European meeting dedicated to scientific research and innovation. ESOF2010 will take place from the 2nd to the 7th of July in Turin.

Taking advantage of this big international event, the Torino Chamber of Commerce and Unioncamere Piemonte are organising a brokerage event aiming to facilitate the cooperation opportiunies between Research & Bussiness throught planned bilateral meetings. This event is organised in the framework of the Enterprise Europe Network, the largest European network of contact points providing information and advice on EU matter to improve innovation and competitiveness of European companies and in particular of SMEs .

FOCUS
The one to one meetings are primarily aiming at encouraging the building of consortia to participate to projects co-financed by the 7 Framework Programme (FP7), the main financial tool to support research and development activities in Europe. The brokerage event is a unique opportunity for companies, research centres and universities to meet potential partners for research projects, cooperation agreements and technology transfer.

Nucleonica for KIT students

July 1st, 2010
by Joseph Magill

On 6th of July 2010 the Nucleonica Web Portal and the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart will be presented to the students of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) at the Institute exhibition of Fakultät für Maschinenbau. Both products will be exhibited along with presentations from eight different research institutes involved in nuclear science.
The purpose of this event is to give the students information on trainee positions, research fellowships, etc. and provide an overview of research activities in the field of nuclear science. This is a good opportunity for Nucleonica team to present itself to the students and to demonstrate a research approach based on the modelling and computing.

deadline for pre-registration to the ACTINET Summer School is May 31st 2010

May 17th, 2010
by Joseph Magill

This 5th Marcoule practical summer school, interfacing chemical, physical and biological sciences, will focus on Analytical innovation in the field of actinide recycling, particularly:
i) the scientific aspects of actinide recycling (extraction, solvents, radiolysis, modelling, implementation of processes…);
ii) present or prospective developments in analytical techniques (chips, hyphenated techniques…).
The program is organised with a series of introductory lectures giving the state of the art in actinide recycling and prospects, and also in analytical innovations in the field of life science, applicable to chemistry. Two half-day sessions will be devoted to more specific lectures on these two topics.
Two lectures will focus on basic knowledge of actinides, such as actinide chemistry and the chemical thermodynamics of solid solutions.
